@Drumshanbohustle how can you not stand him, you’ve never met him!

growleo1 September 2, 2010 at 10:34 pm

@Drumshanbohustle haha. moreno argentin hated him because he mistook him for another rider once in a race and it pissed armstrong off. So armstrong essentially spat in his face and then beat him in a race moreno was favored in. armstrong wasnt very gracious as a young man, but a vicious champion he will always be.

incredible commentary

DHTCF September 2, 2010 at 11:29 pm

@Rkeezy32 Not true that almost everyone who’s finished in the tour top ten has been caught doping. LeMond won 3 tours clean. Hampsten & Mottet both managed 4th plus stage wins.

@socalrider909 Under the Merckx paint was a Litespeed Classic.

bender0502 September 3, 2010 at 12:24 am

Merckx bikes only come from Belgium. Eddy Merckx is a Belgian and his only factory is near Brussels.

If you do your own research of pictures on web, you will see that Lance race body were similar after his cancer as before.
He testimonied at SCA affair to have a similar weight in every TDF. Coyle’ study says so.
He was probably leighter in 2009 because of AICAR use.

TMccord September 3, 2010 at 2:16 am

its true he did lost a lot of weight. his muscle grew back differently. thats why he looks like less of a bulky rider now, compared to 1993. but over time he reached 165 again. some even say he weighed 174-5 back in 1993

repairdrive September 3, 2010 at 2:59 am

i keep hearing and reading about how he lost so much weight after the cancer thing and how that helped him. Im 5’10″ also and my race weight is 150lbs.

TMccord September 3, 2010 at 3:33 am

he weighs the same now.

repairdrive September 3, 2010 at 3:53 am

165! Lance was so heavy back then.

aznsketcher September 3, 2010 at 4:37 am

@sauceyf4: I love this commentator!

aznsketcher September 3, 2010 at 4:50 am

at the time of this race I was in college and had no idea who he was. used a pic shot during this race as a magazine spread assignment. wish I kept that piece, now that I know who armstrong is….

pfnuesel September 3, 2010 at 5:59 am

We Europeans do not hate Lance Armstrong. Well, some do, but that’s always the case with succesful people. But your comment is ridicolous anyway.

keelhauling September 3, 2010 at 6:26 am

That’s not to say he doesn’t have a lot of reason *to* like him, but yeah… also, I [and a lot of cycling fans] have an issue not with armstrong, but with some of his fans, who have this perception that he is The Greatest Cyclist Who Ever Lived. He’s good, damn good, best *grand tour stage racer* of his era. But not The Best That Ever Was. I don’t mean to diminish his accomplishment, but all I’m saying is people who are not Lance Fans are not simply “jealous” and only like LeMond for his name.

keelhauling September 3, 2010 at 7:21 am

“And why would anyone hate Lance Armstrong?”
I’m saying there is some reason to. What I meant by “golden boy” was that he isn’t some perfect, flawless god whom the Europeans just chose to despise out of spite. He’s (less so these days, but that’s a maturity that’s fairly recent) always been a bit of an arrogant prick, and a lot of people don’t like him not for of all the tours he won, but the way he won… like some people hate the Patriots because they didn’t like the style they won by.

drexelur1 September 3, 2010 at 7:22 am

I don’t know if Lance is a “golden boy”, whatever that means. But he is a man who is the best at what he does, and a very grueling sport at that. And he is one who has survived cancer, and still went on to victory, over much younger opponents. That, and the fact that his occasionally “not nice” personality is the only thing people can say against him, and yes, he is worthy of respect.

keelhauling September 3, 2010 at 8:03 am

Not true. I don’t have a personal problem with Lance Armstrong, but I certainly think that it is not reasonable not to like the man. He has a great “PR Face”, but there are moments where some rather… unfreindly… elements of his personality show up. That and he almost certainly doped in ’99. I’m cool with that, since so did everyone else. But to say he’s some kind of golden boy who the Europeans hate for no reason is rather naïve.
