Thanks!

Tough break with the chain jumping.

mirnanda August 4, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I am going to try to do this. Thanks for the pattern!

slh0dges02 August 4, 2010 at 11:30 pm

What did you use to make the bill?

Panda Face August 4, 2010 at 11:40 pm

I just use a slice of plastic from a school paper folder. Bring a cap with you to the store and find one with the right bendiness.

rmclic August 5, 2010 at 12:25 am

cool!

doubledareyaa August 5, 2010 at 12:39 am

Here’s my first attempt: http://www.flickr.com/photos/doubledareya/2299708254/

Mine is 7 panels cause 8 was too big, and it’s all hand sewn. Next time I’m gonna try the sewing machine.

Frozen Quest August 5, 2010 at 1:21 am

How do you sew the top closed?

Panda Face August 5, 2010 at 1:55 am

You just need to make sure the stitches from all the sides meet up a the peak. If there is a little hole, you can pull it closed by hand with a needle and thread.

tucsanrob August 5, 2010 at 2:08 am

man, you are a saint, ive been trying to freaking make a hat on my own for like 2 hours and i found your design on flickr… muchas gracias senior

Panda Face August 5, 2010 at 2:15 am

haha, glad to hear it.

elainevdw August 5, 2010 at 2:46 am

Sweet! Thanks!

crvhoover August 5, 2010 at 3:37 am

Panda, thanks for this. Definitely a little large for my head, I had to hack one of the sections in half; it came out nicely. Here’s the prototype:
Cycling Cap Making - 1
I can’t wait to hit up the thrift store/fabric shop and make the next one!

excusememams August 5, 2010 at 3:58 am

yes! i had been trying to figure this out on my own for hours when i found your pattern. i just scaled it down and made a cap for my six month old. not such a great picture but…

(his middle name is panda, strangely enough)

thechammp August 5, 2010 at 4:31 am

hey, Iknow this is something I can adjust but my gf noticed that the 7 inch measurement is longer than th 8 inch measurement. maybe the two got switched?

Panda Face August 5, 2010 at 4:46 am

Welp, I never noticed that. Ha! I made this two years ago so I can’t remember what I was thinking. I’ll have to go back to my original patterns and double check.

This was a great project for my 9-year-old son to make for his dad for his birthday. BTW – if the cap turns out too big for some, you can slip a very thin piece of elastic between the back couple of panels (yes, a little seam ripping is involved) and it will pull in very nicely. Thanks for the pattern!

rosebower August 5, 2010 at 5:46 am

Thank you so much for posting this pattern!!! I made one of these this morning out of an old shirt! It is just what I was looking for. Thanks again!

brian.miller August 5, 2010 at 6:18 am

Another big thanks for the pattern! I went right out and learned to sew so I could make these. I made some tweaks – made the bill a lot wider and longer and lengthened each panel or else it looked like a yarmulke – and now it’s perfect. Using lots of fabric from thrift stores keeps it cheap. So thanks again.

izzymcm August 5, 2010 at 7:11 am

Thanks you for posting this! I tried my hand and came up with this:

I need some practice sewing, but I hope to crank out a few more. Thanks again!

genliu August 5, 2010 at 8:04 am

I stumbled across this pattern last night and knew I had to try it out. Here’s the first run. I made a "lining" using the pattern cut down by 1/4" and it ended up making the cap reversible…

Thanks for sharing your creativity!

WJ Rijper August 5, 2010 at 8:57 am

Just wondering: why is the bill width listed as 7" and the rest as 8" when the cap is bigger on the pattern? Should I scale it myself?

Panda Face August 5, 2010 at 9:33 am

Yeah, I screwed up there. The bill should be 7 inches, smaller than actually pictured. Although you should definitely scale to your own taste.

WJ Rijper August 5, 2010 at 9:52 am

Thanks I will. Nice idea by the way (y)

Iva Live Photography August 5, 2010 at 10:16 am

Thanks for the pattern! I eyeballed the pattern with a pencil and tape measure, so I could make a beanie. I had seen this pattern before, and I like my bike caps a bit different, but it worked really well for this:

(Terrible pics, I know, please forgive)

Steezsleez August 5, 2010 at 10:47 am

Ok so I wanted to try to make this but do you have any detail photos of the brim? I don’t know how to like cover the piece of plastic without making it look really bad.

rhizopogon August 5, 2010 at 11:26 am

Thanks for the pattern. Just made my first one. I’m still pretty rusty with the machine, but the results are functional if a bit rough around the edges.

Shown here with earflaps deployed:
flaps down, prepare for landing!

thanks for the pattern, i almost bought one and deconstruct it for it:D
i will show the result fo’sho.
merci beaucoup

ProjectRabbit August 5, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Hey I know NOTHING about sewing, but am very excited to learn. I have no idea how to read this pattern, can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out all this crafty goodness?specifically how to translate patterns like this. Any help is awesome!

jeremiah.howard.bailey August 5, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Hey I’m somewhat in the same boat as ProjectRabbit.
I can read the patter, but i don’t know where to begin the sewing. What piece should i start with? What order should i go in? Start with the hem or or save it to last? How do i sew elastic? I really really want to know!!!

aargh✭だにい August 5, 2010 at 2:08 pm

hey so i finished the first one. i must say i ain’t no tailor but this pattern is just like a nice kick start. i ended up freestyling with the sewing machine with not a satisfiing result:/
so if you download it make your scaling so the you have the right dimensions!

mykindofscum August 5, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I just finished my first one last night. Yes, the dimensions didn’t match up when i printed. The cap came out too small, for kid i guess. I ended up stitching an elastic band on the back. I need a sewing machine bad.

mykindofscum August 5, 2010 at 3:24 pm

For the elastic, i use another cycling cap as a guide. i basically just stitched each end of the elastic. The elastic should be shorter since it stretches. I stitch one end, stretch the other end and stitch that. Then fold the end of the cap to cover the elastic and stitch that. I hope this makes sense.

yarnfiend138 August 5, 2010 at 4:19 pm

This is awesome!
Do you line your caps? With any different material? Did you infuse them, do you attach lining to exterior with anything other than stitches?

Thanks!

Kyle Letendre August 5, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Thanks so much for the pattern; I’ve been sewing these up in a frenzy.
Tip to the wise: the image on flickr won’t print out correctly, but if you draw it out according to measurements on a piece of paper, you’ll be golden. I have a big head myself, and this has been fittin’ me perfectly.

And more to come.
Thanks again!

craftylittlemonkey August 5, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Nice. Will make for sure. A little tip in case you’re interested, for brims I use a slice of old yogurt container. It’s got terrific bend already and is very durable.

Kim Sung Kyu August 5, 2010 at 6:30 pm

someone needs to make a step by step instructional video or something. This is way to hard for the novice….

Tchkvsky August 5, 2010 at 7:26 pm

whats the mesurment on the slit on the side panels?

Gun Mother August 5, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Augh, just like everyone else has said, you are brilliant.

I’m going to secretly sew one for my boyfriend for Christmas, but I have a question.

What is your favorite fabric to work with when making hats?
I only make stuffed animals, so any fabric that isn’t some crazy-fuzzy-synthetic-thing is a mystery to me.

Thanks again!

Panda Face August 5, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I would say that wool is definitely the best. A tightly woven wool such as a suit wool. But I’ve also used various cotton fabrics with very similar results.

Adrienne V. August 5, 2010 at 8:43 pm

Thanks for the pattern! I’m going to make another one for my boyfriend when he gets home!

mdniteskys August 5, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Hey man this pattern is pretty sweet. I’m in the process of making one and it’s turning out pretty good, but I how do you get the bill stiff enough to be able to flip up. I’m also confused on how you connected the bill to the hat itself.

Made one of these last-minute for Portland’s Tweed Ride. Came out great, thanks!
