What Kind of Bicycle Should I Buy for College?

by Bicycle Parts on July 31, 2011

I need a bike that can get me around campus as well as down the road a few miles to the beach. Also, I hope to use my bike to ride on trails, but I don't necessarily need a mountain bike. I just want the bicycle that'll be the most reliable/dependable for every and any place I want to take it.

I need something for a good price, and I don't need anything spectacular (awesome, expensive bikes are much more likely to be stolen on campus than something simple).

Ideas?

The option, behind door #2, is a hybrid bike. It has road gearing upright sitting position, wider smooth road tires. It will be fast, comfortable and safe on streets, paths, roads, dirt, gravel. and even light trails rides. Put on a rear rack, and attach a stainless steel basket to it. You can just toss in books, soccer bags, even a large bag of groceries with no muss or fuss. It will meet all your terrain demands, and even do well on the boardwalk and packed sand.

I have one each, as described, for both of my college daughters. They use them on the weekends for intermediate distance and trail rides…. and, even use them for touring the wine country and the Bay area.

Be sure to get two locks, A Krypto Ulock, and a 6 ft x 5/8 Schalge cable lock (available at Lowe’s). Try to always store it indoors. I always stored mine vertically on the bikes rear wheels in a corner of my dorm or apartment.

I was looking at the trek 820 hardtail mountain bike as a cheap new bike for me to ride around in and feel relatively safe to lock up and leave around compared to my road bike. Its about $300 depending on the seller, and that’s cheap for me. Other options would be to get a hybrid in general if you were looking to ride on non paved trails as well. Otherwise you can look at used bikes for a lower price. Make sure you get a bike your size so its comfortable to ride around and won’t injure your knees.

You are right in assuming that “awesome, expensive bikes are much more likely to be stolen on campus than something simple.”

But, I still wouldn’t go too simple. I’d definitely look for one with plenty of gears for uphill & downhill situations. I’d be looking on craigslist for a quality used bike. (No joke) I’d be looking for a Trek, Raleigh, Specialized, Giant, etc. If you can find a good hybrid or comfort bike that would be even better.

Then buy a good U-Bolt lock combined with a cable to pass through the front & rear wheels. Link below.

go with a hybrid…it has a mountain style frame with commuter wheels and tires. You can also swap tires and wheels with a mountain set for rougher terrain.
