hello
Single speed means one gear, right? So why do people ride these bicycles, if its hard to go up hills, and you cant go very fast? what is the advantage of such a bicycle.

Easier maintenance, cheaper, not constantly thinking about gearing while riding, more efficiency in the drive train, among others. Also, for fixed-gear bikes specifically, they force you to pedal constantly, thus improving your pedaling technique, and more connectivity to the road. Also, at least for fixed gears, it’s just fun in my opinion. I actually rode my Trek hybrid a couple days ago that I hadn’t ridden for probably 4 months or so as I’ve only been riding my fixed gear, and honestly, I didn’t like it anymore. This is after riding that bike for 1 1/2 years without any real complaints. There is just a special feeling about fixed gears.

Wow you seem to know a lot Anarcho and yes it is very hard to go up hills but, fixed gear bikes (single speed) are mainly used for training purposes and on a track or velodrome. They get good rhythm into your legs and as Anarcho said, they help improve power in your legs as you can not stop peddling.

So if you want to train up and get nice calf muscles use a fixed gear bike.

Good luck and hope this helps!

Hazzer!
