Note that you can pay this fee late; however, your scores will start after the fee is paid--they will not be retroactive. RULES:*

Registration is required. (See above)

A racer must participate in 6 events to be eligible for a trophy. One of those events can be Pay Dirt.

If there are fewer than 5 points-series contestants registered for a category, that category may be combined with another.

Racers who finish in the top 10 of their class/category will receive a score. Points will be awarded as follows:

1st = 10 points
2nd = 9 points
3rd = 8 points
etc.

However, the Finals will be worth double-points, (e.g., 1st = 20, 2nd = 18, etc.).

Racers are welcome to race all of the races; however, the seven (7) highest scores of each racer will be counted. Thus, if a racer had 10 scores (i.e., 9 races + Pay Dirt*) the lowest 2 scores would be discarded. Each racer can have a maximum of 8 scores. A "perfect" season for a rider would be 110 points (8 first-place finishes=80; + the first-place finals=20; + PayDirt=10). But the most points a racer could use toward the championship would be 90.

"Pay Dirt" is explained below.

The Finals will be on September 19 (i.e., The KY Open). Racers are required to be at the Finals. Should there be a tie, the results of the Finals will be the tie-breaker.

A racer will not be allowed to change categories. They must remain in the category that they register for.
Results will be posted on this website.

"PAY DIRT:"

Racers can earn first-place points by making improvements on the trails that are used for races in the series. For six (6) hours of trail work, a racer will earn 10 points. If interested, use the contacts above to set up a time and place.
PAY DIRT
The following is copied from an old issue of "Trail News," the newsletter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA):

Pay Dirt program expands

Two more IMBA -affiliated clubs have adopted the Pay Dirt programs , which gives racers extra points for their participation in trailwork events. In Georgia, the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) has joined with the Georgia Association of Promoters and the North Georgia Bicycle Dealers Association to create the 1998 Georgia Mountain Bike Series. It will include nearly 30 mountain bike cross-country races, awarding points for places one through 20 in 28 categories. SORBA will serve as the series coordinator and will receive from the promoters one dollar for each entrant. Racers may earn first place points, one time only, for volunteering ten hours of time in a trailwork event sanctioned by either a state parks official or a SORBA representative.

In Arizona, the Mountain Bike Association is creating a similar program, although they do not call it Pay Dirt. MBAA already has its own well established race series. In September, its board voted 6-1 to allow racers to earn six points per hour of MBAA approved trail maintenance, up to a maximum of 60 points per season.

In their newsletter Trax , MBBA's board refuted some of the arguments against adopting the program. The lone dissenting board member, Jim Stabler, wrote a sperarate opinion which explained his initial reasons for voting no, but then recognized the merits of the pro arguments, endorsed the decision and encouraged members to support the plan. "I am impressed by the fact that two of the board members who voted for the rule, Wayne Gorry and Scott Hansen, are State Champions," Stabler wrote. "In the long run, the rule will help all trail users and encourage increased acceptance of mountain bikes and mountain bike races on public lands. It deserves our support."

The "Pay Dirt" was started by the Jersey Off Road Bicycling Association in New Jersey.
