Twenty years ago, a mountain
bike race was held in the old hardwood forests that
surround the ski lodge at General
Butler State Resort Park in
Carrollton, Kentucky. Since 1989 there have been a
variety of off-road cycling competitions at this venue,
including the first National Collegiate Mountain Bike
Championship east of the Rocky Mountains. Other off-road
"firsts" include the region's first kayak triathlon, the
Midwest's first Police-In-Uniform relay, and the first
National Off-Road Wheelchair Championship. The annual
General Butler Off-Road Triathlon is the oldest series in
existence, or so we've been told.
Five miles of forested single-track overlook the
confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers. Although some
of these trails are now 19 years old, the bike trails are
evolving, and we hope, improving. For the running leg of
the triathlon, the Bike Butler folks developed trails
that connect to the park's hiking-trail system.
Within the resort park are full-service campgrounds, a
first-class hotel with pool, and fully furnished,
lakeside cottages. The park also offers a golf course,
canoe rentals, fishing, tennis courts, hiking trails,
biking trails, and other recreational opportunities.
Carrollton is on Interstate 71, less than an hour from
either Cincinnati or Louisville. Indianapolis is a
two-hour drive from the park. We have a page with more
detailed
directions.
